The Immigrant Community Facing Trump’s Immigration Plan: A Concerning Perspective

The immigrant community in the United States has expressed deep concern over the recent immigration policy proposals of former President Donald Trump. Pro-immigrant groups have warned that these policies, if implemented, could have serious consequences, including the reactivation of the “zero tolerance” policy, which could lead to forced family separations and job losses for millions of TPS and DACA holders.

Leaders of immigrant rights in the U.S. have denounced what they consider Trump’s “terrifying immigration vision,” which includes the reactivation of the zero tolerance policy with an even tougher approach, such as building jails to incarcerate undocumented immigrants and expedite deportations. These proposals have been described as an assault on civil liberties and a threat to the integrity of U.S. laws.

Maurice Mitchell, director of the Working Families Party, has even pointed out that a second Trump presidency could end democracy as we know it. Rahna Epting from MoveOn emphasized the need to stay united to prevent the return of a zero tolerance policy.

The former president has promised mass deportations and the elimination of automatic citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants born in the U.S. These proposals have elicited a response from community leaders, who are calling on President Biden to use his executive power to provide relief and address these policies.‌

The current situation of the approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. and the lack of bipartisan agreements in Congress have contributed to an outdated and overwhelmed government response, exacerbating the immigration crisis.
