One of the advantages of TPS is that it allows people to apply for a green card who otherwise would not be able to obtain lawful permanent residence. Oftentimes, people who have TPS did not come to the U.S. legally or overstayed their visas. Therefore, that does not make them eligible to apply for adjustment of status. However, if someone has TPS they are allowed to apply for a travel document and by using that travel authorization they are able to leave the country and return to the United States. After they have that re-entry then they will be eligible to obtain lawful permanent status so long as a family member petitions for them or a business files a labor petition.
