The order, which was to take effect on February 19, sought to prevent children of people without legal immigration status or on temporary visas from automatically gaining citizenship. However, Judge Boardman ruled that this measure contradicts the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which since 1868 has guaranteed citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the country.
The Trump administration has announced that it will appeal this decision, opening the door to a lengthy legal battle.
