Immigrant Visa Pause for Certain Countries: What You Need to Know

The U.S. Department of State announced a temporary suspension in the processing of immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, including Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, effective January 21, 2026.

This measure affects only visas with immigrant intent, meaning those seeking permanent residence, such as:

• Family-based petitions

• EB-1, EB-2, and EB-3 employment-based visas

• EB-4 visa for special workers

It does not apply to tourist or student visas, since they do not carry immigrant intent.

Applications may still be filed, but consular interviews may not be scheduled while the pause remains in effect.

Important exceptions:

• Individuals who already have an approved immigrant visa can use it without issue.

• Individuals with dual nationality may apply using a nationality that is not affected.

• National interest exceptions exist, although they are limited and difficult to obtain.
