On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, in a matter of seconds, two powerful earthquakes shook the north-central part of the country and left a mark that is difficult to describe. In moments like these, distance hurts, but it also reminds us that solidarity knows no borders.

What Happened?

At approximately 6:04 p.m. (local time) on June 24, a first earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck the coastal region west of Caracas. Just about 40 seconds later, a second, even stronger earthquake, of magnitude 7.5, hit the same area. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), these are the strongest earthquakes Venezuela has experienced in more than a century.

Here is what is known so far (figures as of June 25, 2026, which may change):

• The coastal state of La Guaira was declared a disaster zone, and damage has been reported in several regions of north-central Venezuela.
• Dozens of buildings and homes collapsed, and rescue teams continue searching for people among the rubble.
• Venezuelan authorities declared a state of emergency and have reported, so far, at least 164 people dead and about 971 injured, in addition to more than 30 aftershocks.
• The Maiquetía international airport was damaged, which is complicating the arrival of aid.
• The tremor was felt as far away as Colombia. The USGS warned that the actual number of victims could be considerably higher.
• Several countries and international organizations have already offered help and begun mobilizing rescue teams and supplies.

1. Type the organization's website address yourself into your browser, instead of clicking links you receive by message or on social media.
2. Verify that the page is the official one. Web addresses usually end in .org and display clear information about the organization, its finances, and its contact details.
3. Be wary of new or unfamiliar accounts asking for money through private messages, even if they claim to be "collecting for Venezuela."
4. Be careful with personal fundraisers (for example, on crowdfunding platforms). They can be legitimate, but scammers use them too: only donate if you know and trust the person organizing it.
5. Choose recognized organizations with a proven track record, such as those on this list.
6. Keep the receipt for your donation, especially if you plan to deduct it from your taxes.
7. If you receive a call or email pressuring you to donate immediately, take your time. Reputable organizations do not pressure you.
