Could the U.S. Visa Lottery Be Eliminated?

Republican Congressman Mike Collins has proposed ending the Visa Lottery, arguing that it poses a national security risk and that a random system should not decide who receives permanent residence in the country.

This program, created in 1990, grants 55,000 green cards a year to people from countries with low rates of immigration to the U.S. It is also known as the Diversity Visa.

The proposal still needs to be debated in Congress, but it has already generated divided opinions.
