New Bond for Tourist and Business Visas: What You Must Know

Immigration rules change often. The recent announcement by the State Department has caused questions for people planning to visit the United States, whether for vacation (Tourism) or temporary work meetings (Business).

Starting January 21, a new rule begins for B1 and B2 visas. This rule allows officers to ask for money (a bond) from some people before giving them a visa .

What is this new bond requirement?

The government wants to make sure visitors return to their home countries on time. To do this, they expanded this program.

It is very important to know that not everyone has to pay. The consular officer decides this during your interview. If the officer thinks it is necessary, they can ask for a bond of:

• 5,000 dollars
• 10,000 dollars
• 15,000 dollars

Note: Paying this money does not guarantee you will get the visa. It is just an extra step if they decide to approve your tourist or business visa with this condition.

Who has to pay?

This rule is for people from certain countries who are applying for a new B-1 (Business) or B-2 (Tourist) visa. Here are two key points:

1. If you already have a visa: If your B1/B2 visa is valid and in your passport, you do not need to pay anything. You can travel just like before .
2. New Applications: This is only for people applying for the first time or renewing starting January 21 .

The Venezuela Case: Tourism and Business

Venezuela is on the list of affected countries. Many people ask if visas are suspended.

• Partial Suspension: Although there are limits, technically tourist and business visas can still be issued. However, you need a special permission (waiver) .

Because this is a special case, it is very likely that Venezuelan applicants will be asked to pay this bond as a guarantee for either travel purpose .

Authorized Airports: Where can you enter?

If your tourist or business visa is approved with a bond, you cannot enter through just any airport. There are now nine authorized airports:

1. Boston (BOS)
2. New York (JFK)
3. Washington D.C. (IAD)
4. New Jersey (EWR) – New
5. Atlanta (ATL) – New
6. Chicago (ORD) – New
7. Los Angeles (LAX) – New
8. Toronto, Canada (YYZ)
9. Montreal, Canada (YUL)

Warning: Do not try to enter through Miami or Orlando if you have this bond. You could be denied entry.
