Undocumented immigrants who cross the northern border between the United States and Canada without authorization seeking asylum will be arrested and returned to Canada, both countries announced on Friday, March 24, 2023, following a meeting between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
This agreement took effect that same Friday, March 24, 2023, at midnight. Both governments stated they were ready to enforce the terms of the agreement known as the "Safe Third Country" Agreement for asylum seekers crossing between ports of entry, in order to reduce irregular migration along the shared border between Canada and the United States. The "Safe Third Country" Agreement requires that if an unauthorized immigrant crosses from the United States to Canada or vice versa, they must first seek asylum in the first country; otherwise, they will be detained and deported.
