Yesterday, June 1, 2026, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officially announced the appointment of Rosario “Pete” Vasquez as the new Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol. The announcement comes weeks after the departure of Mike Banks, who retired following nearly four decades of federal service.

Who Is Rosario “Pete” Vasquez?
Mr. Vasquez assumes the position with 26 years of career experience inside the U.S. Border Patrol. Throughout his career, he has held strategic positions on both the southern and northern borders of the country.
Until recently, he led the Blaine Sector in Washington State, where he coordinated operations along the U.S.–Canada border. In that role, he worked alongside federal, state, local, and international authorities.
His experience also includes:
- Service in the agency’s special operations group.
- Roles within CBP’s counterterrorism office.
- Participation in the alliance to combat transnational threats, including human smuggling and narcotics trafficking networks.
What Will Be Under His Responsibility?
The new Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol will oversee one of the largest operational structures in the federal government:
- Nearly 20,000 agents and professional staff deployed across the United States.
- More than 7,000 miles of international land border, including the southern border with Mexico and the northern border with Canada.
- Thousands of miles of coastal waters under the agency’s responsibility.
According to CBP’s statement, his mission will be to oversee border surveillance and security operations at what the agency describes as a key moment for national security.
Who Is Leaving the Position?
Vasquez succeeds Mike Banks, who decided to retire from federal service after 37 years. Banks served as Chief of the Border Patrol for approximately fifteen months.
