Breaking News: A federal judge in Maryland, Deborah Boardman, has blocked an executive order from President Donald Trump that sought to eliminate birthright citizenship in the U.S.

The order, which was set to take effect on February 19, sought to prevent the children of individuals without legal immigration status or with temporary visas from automatically obtaining citizenship. However, Judge Boardman determined that this measure contradicts the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution, which since 1868 has guaranteed citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the country.

The Trump administration has announced it will appeal this decision, opening the door to a prolonged legal battle.
