One major benefit applies to people who do not have a very strong case, or who need to buy time to explore other alternatives to obtain legal status in this country without having to rely on a court proceeding before an immigration judge. However, a significant disadvantage applies to people who do have a strong case — that is, people with good cases who unfortunately will have to wait a long time for their cases to be processed, because immigration courts currently face an enormous backlog. There are currently more than 3 million cases pending in immigration courts.
