How to check your USCIS case status online

Waiting for USCIS news is stressful. Fortunately, USCIS offers several online tools to check your case status. Here is how to use them properly and interpret what you see.

Tool 1: USCIS Case Status (egov.uscis.gov)

The most basic, well-known tool.

How to use it

1. Go to egov.uscis.gov/casestatus.
2. Enter your 13-character receipt number (3 letters + 10 digits, e.g., MSC2190012345).
3. You will see the latest status message.

Common prefixes

Typical messages

• "Case Was Received": USCIS received your application.

• "Biometrics Appointment Was Scheduled": appointment scheduled.
• "Request for Initial Evidence Was Sent": RFE — USCIS wants more documents.
• "Case Was Approved": approved (congratulations).
• "Case Was Denied": denied (review letter).
• "New Card Is Being Produced": card in production.

Tool 2: my.uscis.gov account

More complete than the public site.

Benefits

• See all your cases in one place.
• Receive email notifications.
• Upload documents to electronic cases.
• Integrated change of address.
• Messaging with USCIS.

How to create it

1. Go to my.uscis.gov.
2. Create an account with email.
3. Verify identity.
4. Add your receipt numbers.

Tool 3: e-Request (service inquiries)

If your case is outside normal processing time, you can start an electronic service request.

Common types:

• Case outside normal processing time.
• Did not receive expected notice.
• Erroneous notice (misspelled name).
• USCIS support for missed interview or appointment.

Access: inside my.uscis.gov or at egov.uscis.gov/e-request.

Tool 4: Processing times

Go to egov.uscis.gov/processing-times and:

1. Select the form (I-130, I-485, N-400, etc.).
2. Select the office or center holding your case.
3. See the current estimated time.

If your case exceeds that, you qualify for a service request (Outside Processing Time).

Tool 5: FOIA (full file)

If you want to see exactly what USCIS has on your case (forms, notes, decisions), request your file under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act).

How:

1. Go to first.uscis.gov.
2. Create account or use an existing one.
3. Request your file (A-file).

Time: several months typically. But invaluable before appealing or filing a motion. See: appealing a USCIS denial.

If your case is "stuck"

Sometimes the system shows no update for weeks or months. That is normal. USCIS only updates at stage changes, not daily.

When to worry:

• More than 6 months without movement after receipt.
• Beyond posted normal processing time.
• Missing biometrics appointment that should have arrived.
• Address change not reflected.

In those cases:

1. First: electronic service request (e-Request).
2. If no response: call the USCIS Contact Center (1-800-375-5283).
3. If nothing works: contact the USCIS Ombudsman or your congressional representative.

Common mistakes

• Confusing receipt number with A-number.
• Searching with the old center prefix after a transfer.
• Assuming silence = denial.
• Not reporting address change within 10 days.

Important: change of address

Under federal law (8 USC §1305), you must notify USCIS of any address change within 10 days. Use Form AR-11 or the online system. Failing to do so can stall your case because notices go to the old address.
