Humanitarian Parole for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans

Immigration Processes (CHNV)

What is the humanitarian parole?

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has implemented a process that allows nationals of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, along with their immediate family members, to apply for temporary entry into the United States for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit.

Key Points of the Process

  1. Travel authorization is granted to up to 30,000 people per month.
  2. Beneficiaries can receive temporary stay permission for up to two years.
  3. It is necessary to have a supporter in the United States.

Requirements for Beneficiaries

To be considered for this process, beneficiaries must meet several criteria:

  • Be outside the United States.
  • Be a national of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, or Venezuela, or be an immediate family member of an eligible national.
  • Have a valid passport for travel.
  • Pass security and background checks.
  • Meet public health requirements, including certain vaccinations.
  • Demonstrate that they deserve favorable consideration.

The Role of the Supporter

A crucial element in this process is the supporter in the United States. This person must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or have legal status in the U.S.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Demonstrate financial capacity to support the beneficiary.

Responsibilities of the Supporter:

  • Receive and help with the beneficiary’s initial accommodation.
  • Assist with basic needs and paperwork.
  • Ensure that the beneficiary’s medical needs are covered.

Additional Benefits

Once in the United States with temporary stay permission, beneficiaries can:

  • Apply for work authorization.
  • Obtain a Social Security number.
  • Explore other immigration options.
